Featured this month:  The First Apparition & the Rosary, Reflection on First Saturday, Papal Blessing and Plenary Indulgence for Pontevedra Centenary

Dear Readers

As we welcome the joyful month of Mary, may we turn with renewed hope to the First Apparition at Fatima and to Mary’s loving call to pray the Rosary; in this Easter season of new life, her message feels especially urgent as our world continues to be wounded by ongoing wars, violence, and the suffering of innocent people. Yet, Mary reminds us that grace can still break through conflict, peace is never beyond God’s reach, and the conversion of hearts remains possible. May our devotion this month draw us more deeply into Christ’s light, trusting that through the gentle guidance of His Mother our prayer may become a source of healing, consolation, and peace for a world longing to be made whole.

MAY - THE FIRST APPARITION & THE ROSARY

The Holy Rosary

The Holy Rosary

From St Dominic’s vision in 1208 to Our Lady’s words at Fatima in 1917, Mary has consistently called the Church to pray the Holy Rosary. At Fatima she revealed, “I am the Lady of the Rosary,” urging daily prayer for peace and conversion. The Rosary is not merely beads but a living proclamation of the Gospel — each Our Father shaping us in Christ, each Hail Mary recalling the Incarnation’s victory. Mary leads us as she led Sr Lucia, inviting us to take up this prayer for the renewal of hearts and the world.  Read more here.

Dear Members,

In 1917, the Blessed Virgin appeared to three shepherd children with a message of conversion,โ€ฏprayerโ€ฏand penance inโ€ฏreparationโ€ฏfor sinsโ€ฏand for the conversion of sinners, together with a more genuine devotion toโ€ฏthe Eucharist, and consecration to her Immaculate Heart.โ€ฏThe Blessed Virgin made know the importance of praying the Rosaryโ€ฏon a daily basisโ€ฏand the importance of our prayers in making supplications.โ€ฏ

May is often associated with the Blessed Virgin and is also theโ€ฏmonth when she made her first appearance at Fatima, promising to return the following five months.

It is a timeโ€ฏwhenโ€ฏwe can renew our devotion to our Holy Mother by honouring her request to undertake the Five first Saturday devotion. This devotion is still largelyโ€ฏunknown andโ€ฏyet carries with it a great promiseโ€ฏmade by Our Lady to assist at the hour of death all who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep Our Lady company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to Our Holy Mother.

Through prayer, and in particular the Rosaryโ€ฏwe can bring peace to our troubled world, and by making our small acts of reparation such as the first Saturdays devotion we can help save souls.

Theโ€ฏ"Triumphโ€ฏof the Immaculate Heart" involves the active participation of the laity.โ€ฏPlease help spread this devotion within your families,โ€ฏparishesโ€ฏand diocese. One world praying together for world peace will make a difference.โ€ฏ

Theological Reflection.โ€ฏPope Benedict XVIโ€ฏVisited Fatima in 2010. He clarified that the prophetic mission of Fatima is "not yet complete," emphasizing that the call to prayer and penance is perennial.โ€ฏ

Noticesโ€ฏ

  1. This month our cathedral tour will visit the cathedral of St Michael and St George at Portsmouth.โ€ฏ
  2. Looking further ahead the cathedral tour to the diocese of Wrexham has been cancelled due to refurbishment works. Likewise similar works to the Cathedral in the diocese of Salford has postponed the planned visitation, which will now take place on 1-4 October 2027.โ€ฏ

Yours devotedly in Christ and in the Immaculate Heart of Mary.โ€ฏ

Under the loving command of His Creature – St Joseph, the Worker (1st May)

St Joseph remains one of the most astonishing figures in salvation history: the man chosen for the greatest earthly mission after Our Lady, and yet the most hidden; the guardian of the Redeemer, and yet the most silent; the protector of the Word made Flesh, and yet the one whose own words never appear in Scripture. His silence is not emptiness. It is revelation.

Joseph’s entire life is a living “yes” to God, spoken not with the tongue but with the total obedience of his heart. When the angel appears in a dream, Joseph does not question. He rises. When the Child is threatened, he does not hesitate. He flees into the night. When the Holy Family returns to Nazareth, he does not seek honour. He works, day after day, shaping wood while the Creator of the universe grows under his roof.

Ascension (14th May), Pentecost (24th May), and Holy Trinity (31st May):

Three Pillars of the Easter Mystery in the Light of the Messages of Fatima

The first apparitions at Fatima unfolded in the radiant joy of the Easter season. They echo beautifully and profoundly the three great solemnities that crown this sacred time: Ascension, Pentecost, and Holy Trinity. Each reveals a facet of God’s saving love, and each resonates with the message entrusted to the shepherd children.

  •  Ascension lifts our hearts to God through prayer, sacrifice, and hope.
  • Pentecost pours out the Holy Spirit, whom Our Lady invites us to welcome through the daily Rosary.
  •  The Holy Trinity draws us into the very mystery of divine love.

Servant of God ‘Rhoda Wise’: First Apparition, the Rosary & a chain of Grace

May, the month dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, invites us to rediscover the ways Mary continues to draw souls to her Son. Among the most compelling modern witnesses to Mary’s maternal care is Servant of God Rhoda Wise. A humble woman from Canton, Ohio, whose life of suffering became the seedbed of extraordinary grace and continues to inspire the faithful today.

At the heart of Rhoda’s life is the Rosary, Mary’s school of trust, perseverance, and intercession. Through it, a remarkable chain of grace unfolded, touching saints, and apostles of the modern age.

 FROM OUR NATIONAL SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

Dear WAF family,

“Unlucky for some, 13”

As we open the Month of May, the Month of Our Lady, we open the Fatima Season for, from May 13th to Oct 13th 1917, Our Lady appeared at Fatima Portugal to reveal the Peace Plan of Heaven.

As we begin the Fatima season this year, we do so in the centennial year of the Immaculate Heart and specifically the First Saturday Devotion for 5 consecutive months.โ€ฏ

We are used to the expression that many associate the number 13 with bad luck, but for us as devotees of Our Lady of Fatima, 13 becomes the lucky number in that it becomes a day of great hope and promise.โ€ฏ

We are aware that in the Bible and Catholic theology, certain numbers have great significance for us. For example, the number 40, the 40 days that Noah spent in the ark, the 40 years Moses led the people to freedom, the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness etc. Similarly with the number seven, the seven stone water jars in the Wedding feast of Cana, the seven days of the week, the seven Sacraments etc.โ€ฏ

So, it is with the number 13. In the Old Testament, we encounter the story of Queen Esther. Esther was a Jew and she and her people were to be annihilated due to a deceptive plot. However, on the 13th of the Jewish month of Adar, Queen Esther goes uninvited into the presence of the king. she undertakes this life-threatening movement after fasting and prayer. The king sees her beauty and is overwhelmed, especially when Queen Esther faints. The king then discovers the plot to kill the Jewish people and instead orders the proponents of this scheme to be put to death. Esther by her valiant intercession and mediation on behalf of her own people is able to save them from disaster. It is therefore easy to see how the Church interprets this event as a “type” a “prefigurement” of Our Lady and specifically how the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima on the 13th of each month from May to October is a fulfilment of the Queen Esther story as in many cases of significant Old Testament women and events which point to Our Lady.โ€ฏ

Like Esther, Our Lady came to Fatima to save her people from evil by showing them the right path to follow. The name Esther is from the Hebrew meaning “star” and “happiness.” Sister Luciaโ€ฏtold Dominican Father Thomas McGlynn who sculpted the great Immaculate Heart Statue on the old Basilica tower that Our Lady always had a star on her tunic. The star was yellow.โ€ฏ

Esther was a queen. Our Lady is an infinitely greater queen, whom we celebrate on the feast of the Queenship of Mary, Aug. 22nd, and in the 5th Glorious mystery of the Rosary. Our Lady directed us to pray the Rosary at every apparition.

Which brings up another 13.โ€ฏ

It was in the 13th century that Our Lady gave St. Dominic the Rosary. Also, in the 13th century, she gave St. Simon Stock the Brown Scapular. On Oct. 13th at Fatima, Our Lady appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, silently teaching us about the scapular. Lucia later affirmed, “the Scapular and the Rosary are inseparable. The scapular is a sign of consecration to Our Lady.”

The Fatima message directs us to Jesus, especially in the Holy Eucharist. Mary first appeared on May 13th, the original feast of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. During that apparition, the children experienced the light of God coming from Mary’s open hands; they fell to their knees and prayed, “O Most Holy Trinity, I adore you! My God, my God, I love you in the Most Blessed Sacrament.” we can therefore see the great connection between the message of Fatima revealed by Our Lady,โ€ฏwhich leads us to closer union with her son Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament. The Fatima apparitions begin with the appearance of the angel who gives the children holy communion, Our Lady appears first on May 13th, the feast of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and we recall that the final apparition of Our Lady too, sister Lucia in 1929 was on June 13th. This apparition at Tuy, shows Our Lady with her Immaculate Heartโ€ฏstanding at the foot of the cross in which she sees Jesus crucified and the precious blood falling into a chalice, reminding us of the Holy Mass once again.โ€ฏ

As we open this sweet month of May in honour of Our Lady the Queen of May, let us always be aware that when we listen to the appeal of Our Lady, her message of prayer and penance, she comes as the fulfilment and new Queen Esther to save us and especially those of us who are most in need of Mercy.โ€ฏ

For us then who love Our Lady of Fatima, the number 13 becomes the “lucky number” which gives us the opportunity each month of a Marian appointment with Our Lady to put into affect her message and so help bring about the triumph of her Immaculate Heart.โ€ฏ

With the assurance of my prayers for you all as you begin the beautiful month of May.

O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today,โ€ฏ

Queenโ€ฏof the angels and Queen of the May.

WAF Visitation to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral: A Reflective Account

By Marie Yakeza Te-Mendoza

My journey towards the visitation of the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima, together with the relics of Saints Francisco and Jacinta, to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral began quietly on 7 March 2026. After the previous parish visitation, we brought the statue, her crown, the relics, and other essentials to the Cathedral. Entering through the back door, climbing up to the music room, and meeting Father Vitaly, I found myself filled with questions. There was a deep sense of anticipation—this was no ordinary visit. This would be the first time the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue would come to the Ukrainian Cathedral in London. Something historic was about to unfold, and I was both curious and expectant.
