Dear Readers,

This is the Fifth  edition of our new updated newsletter, for the month of November. We hope you will enjoy reading about the latest Fatima news both locally and internationally..

NOVEMBER - MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS

November is the month of the Holy Souls and so this is an important time during which to remember our own loved ones, and more generally the souls in Purgatory.

Regarding purgatory in the Catechism we find this passage: “The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the ... the tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire” (1031).

Jesus certainly spoke about hell as a place of fire, of eternal punishment... read the article

News updates from Patrick Cunningham

๏ปฟDear WAF Members

2025 AGM Overview

I would first like to thank everyone who attended the WAF–E&W 8th Annual General Meeting, held at St Catherine of Siena Church in Chessington. I extend appreciation to Fr Peter Sebastian, guest speakers Antonia Moffat and Fr Lawrence Lew OP, and all those who contributed to making the three-day event such a remarkable success

I am pleased to report that the Apostolate continues to make noteworthy progress, both in evangelisation and in furthering Sister Lucia’s call to make Our Lady known and loved.

The fruits of the Apostolate’s work over the past year were evident in our many initiatives: the promotion of the Rosary, the formation of prayer cells and promoters, thirty-one cathedral and parish visitations, and a national pilgrimage to Fatima with our patron, Bishop Mark O’Toole. We also reached out to young people through the Young Missionaries of Mary.

๏ปฟI am also pleased to announce the election of two new trustees. Please join me in welcoming Ethel Lojo as our new National Treasurer and Anthony Handley as a Board Member.

Antonia Moffat delivered a thoughtful résumé of the Fatima message, reflecting on the connection between the requests for the Consecration and the First Five Saturdays Devotion. She emphasised how each supports the other, and two words from her talk particularly struck me: “It matters.” You can view her talk or look at the  pdf here

Fr Lawrence Lew spoke powerfully about the redemptive value of suffering. His talk was both inspiring and illuminating, reminding us that our sufferings, when united with Christ’s Passion, become a powerful form of sacrifice. As Fr Lawrence said: “Suffering without love is hell. Suffering with love is a sacrifice which transforms and unites us with Christ on the Cross.” You can view his  talk here

As we leave behind the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary, we now enter the month devoted to the Holy Souls. Let us remember all the Holy Souls in our prayers and reflect on the importance of prayer and sacrifice. Our prayers and sacrifices truly matter.

Spiritual reflections from Canon Jason ๏ปฟ

Dear WAF Family,

On this 1st November, the first Saturday of the month of November, Pope Leo will officially proclaim St John Henry Cardinal Newman a Doctor of the Church.

November also starts the Month of the Holy Souls, so it is fitting that we use as our reflection this month the hymn of the Cardinal which we will sing in our parishes for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Help, Lord, the souls which Thou hast made,

The souls to Thee so dear,

In prison for the debt unpaid,

Of sins committed here.

When we seriously consider the truth and the beauty of Purgatory we are reminded that it’s intimately connected to an important part of the Fatima message namely Reparation.

Purgatory is therefore the place where we repair the damaged our sins have caused in our relationship with God and with others.

We have a debt to pay as both the hymn and the Lord in the Gospel tells us “ you will not get out until you have paid the last penny”

We are in indebted to God for all He has given us and for His constant display of Mercy and yet how we have squandered His blessings and taken all for granted and abused this immense generosity.

Purgatory as the Church reminds us iลŸ where after our death we repair for the temporal damage incurred from our sins committed in life.

As we approach the centennial celebration anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Pontevedra let us resolve not only to encourage each other to start the 5 First Saturday devotion but also to repeat them if we have already done them as a fitting form of reparation for our sins so as to save us from making up and repaying the debt in Purgatory after our death.

The 5 first Saturday devotion we undertake, provides a powerful means of making reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the sins by which they are offended. This includes all sins committed by our deceased family and friends.

The souls in Purgatory are still making reparation for their sins. The reparation we make on their behalf helps them pay off their debt sooner so that they can obtain Heaven more quickly and when they arrive how they will remember and assist us.

May we take advantage of all of the means of the Church and the Jubilee Indulgence this Holy Year to help empty purgatory so that all souls may be led to heaven especially those most in need of mercy - the Holy Souls in purgatory.

May they rest in peace.

Assurance of prayers and may I ask for your prayers for on 1st November I will celebrate my 28th anniversary of Ordination

With prayers

Fr Jason

A Beautiful reflection on Holy Souls for the moth of November by Donal Foley

November Indulgences for the Holy Souls

Regarding gaining November Indulgences for the Holy Souls, it is worth knowing that from midday , 1st November, until midnight 2nd November, it is possible to gain a Plenary Indulgence which is applicable to the Holy Souls only, under these conditions:

Make a visit to a Church, say there an Our Father and one of the Creeds, and then fulfil the usual conditions of Confession - up to eight days before or afterwards - and also Holy Communion, and prayers for the intentions of the Pope (one Our Father and one Hail Mary). The indulgence may be gained only once a day.

In addition, a Plenary Indulgence can usually also be gained between 1st and 8th November, applicable to the Holy Souls only, by visiting a cemetery and praying there for the dead, even if the prayer is only mental, and then fulfilling the conditions above, including the prayers for Pope.

Anything we do to help the Holy Souls is a great act of charity since they can no longer help themselves, and are utterly dependent on us to help them.

If we release a soul from Purgatory, they will be eternally grateful and will intercede with God for us while we remain on earth.

Suitable indulgenced prayers which can be said at any time for those in purgatory are:

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.”

And:

“May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
