- After the confession, do the penance the priest assigns.
Prayer before Confession
Come, Holy Spirit, into my soul, and enlighten my mind that I may know the sins I ought to confess and grant me Your grace to confess them fully, humbly and with a contrite heart. Help me to firmly resolve, not to commit them again.
Blessed Virgin, Mother of my redeemer, Mirror of innocence and sanctity, and refuge of penitent sinner, intercede for me through the passion of your Son, that I may obtain the grace to make a good Confession.
All you Blessed Angels and Saints of God, pray for me, a most miserable sinner, that I may repent of my evil ways, and that my heart may henceforth be forever united with Christ in eternal love. Amen
Act of Contrition
“God, our loving Father I am exceedingly sorry for having offended You because You are infinitely good and deserve all my love, and because sin displeases You. Though my sins, I have defiled my soul and risked losing heaven and deserving the fire of hell. “I humbly ask your pardon, through the merits of Jesus Christ, and I firmly resolve with the help of your Divine Grace, to offend You no more, to do penance for my sins, with the help of your divine grace, to avoid occasions of sin.” Amen
Procedure in the Confessional
- Start by saying: “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (state length of time) since my last confession. These are my sins…”
- Then confess your sins, beginning with mortal sins and the number of times, it was committed since your last confession. When you have finished confessing your sins, you should say: “For these and for all the sins of my past, I am truly sorry.”
- Afterwards, the priest will give the necessary advice, assign your penance and ask you to say the ‘Act of Contrition’. Then, wait and listen as the priest gives the absolution.
- Finally, thank the priest, leave the confessional and perform the penance assigned by the priest.
