First Saturday Devotions: Recap and Looking to the Future
First Saturday Devotions at Holy Rood, Swindon – Recap and Looking to the Future - by Priyanka Peixoto
Our parish of Holy Rood, Swindon, is one of the largest parishes in Clifton Diocese. We have a multicultural congregation with people from different ethnic groups participating in the life of the parish. A significant proportion of the congregation are of Goan origin, which has a historic Portuguese connection. This probably explains why there exists a strong devotion to Our Lady of Fatima amongst the congregation.
It was during the pandemic that First Saturday devotions commenced in our parish. Julia D’Sousa, who is now the WAF promoter for Holy Rood, along with the support of her family and several parishioners formed a prayer group that met online to pray for the parish and beyond, which included the First Saturday devotions.๏ปฟ
In 2022, when parish life returned to a ‘new normal’, the First Saturday devotions moved to the parish church. With the support of our parish priest at the time, Canon John Cunningham, this took the form of an hour and a half of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, together with praying the Fatima prayers and the Rosary with meditations on the mysteries.
In June 2023, the parish was privileged to host a visitation of the National Pilgrim Virgin statue and the relics of Saints Jacinta and Francisco. This event from 3rd to 4th June had been eagerly anticipated by the parish. Regular attendees of the First Saturdays and other parishioners came together to support the visitation with various preparatory activities, both behind-the-scenes and during the event.
The visitation was a great blessing with hundreds lining up after each of the four Masses that weekend to pray before the Pilgrim Virgin and venerate the relics of Saints Jacinta and Francisco. Jerry Rivera, WAF E&W National President, gave a talk about the First Saturday devotions and the Fatima message of penance and reparation, which is very relevant today. We also had an enrolment ceremony in the Brown Scapular.

The WAF team had various books, leaflets, and other devotional items available to spread the message of Our Lady. Such was the demand for scapulars that we ran out of them! The devotion of the people was moving to see; particularly at the farewell procession of the Pilgrim Virgin. Parishioners lined up the street, with flowers in hand, waving her goodbye.
Since then, we have continued with the First Saturdays in the church, with the approval of our new parish priest, Fr. Lucas Rodrigues. We continue to encourage more parishioners to join this devotion by publicising it in the church via the newsletter, posters, announcements and also through social media and personal invitation. Several parishioners have come together to form a team to support the First Saturdays via music ministry, leading the prayers, and planning and organising for future visitations of the National Pilgrim Virgin statue, etc.
We are also close to launching the Home Pilgrim Virgin visitation programme. By visiting each home, we know that Our Lady will continue to reach out to her children and spread her message of peace, penance and reparation, one family at a time.
From a small seed, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary through the First Saturday devotions is gently blossoming in the parish. May it continue to grow and draw many souls into the school of Mary, so that her Immaculate Heart may triumph in our land and in the world.
